I attended Radiant Logic's workshop today at DIDW. An interesting tidbit that they shared with us was that a whopping 90% of field usage of virtual directories today are around solving authentication problems.
Given all the wonderful use cases that virtual directories solve, I'm a bit surprised the lopsided real world usage. For folks in this space, is this what you're seeing as well?

Authentication and authorization will always be a big use case for Virtual Directory technology.
The basic reason being that applications can easily update a database with relatively real time data which can then be virtualized. The fact that databases can be written to faster than directories and that directories are optimized for search is the base reason. The other thing favoring this use case is that it is easier to coordinate databases with existing applications business logic and work flow mechanisms.
I think as we move more towards web services/SaaS environment virtual directories will be more heavily utilized for Matt Flynn's envisioned use cases.
